The general recommendation is toothbrushing twice a day for two minutes and flossing once a day. Fluoride toothpaste is also highly recommended. Rising with water or mouth rinse is also discouraged for at least 30 minutes after brushing to give the fluoride from your toothpaste time to absorb into and strengthen your teeth. Oral hygiene, however, is a highly personalized aspect of dentistry. With the advent of electric toothbrushes, water/air flossers, and a variety interdental tools, there are many new and exciting options to add to your routine. Working with you, we can develop an oral hygiene plan that suits your needs while also protecting your teeth. The best oral hygiene routine is the one that you will do consistently. Contact us and we can set up an appointment to get you started on your oral hygiene journey.

While home oral hygiene such as brushing and flossing are key to a healthy smile, regular dental exams and cleanings gives your dental team a chance to check in and help you with dental problems that require professional intervention. During your check up, we do a comprehensive check of your mouth, gums, and teeth to detect problems and develop a treatment plan with you to solve these problems. Regular dental cleanings allow us to remove hardened or hard to reach plaque and tartar (calculus) that can be difficult if not impossible to remove yourself. This can also be preventative, as it allows your dental team to intervene before problems get worse and keep your treatment quick, easy, and economical. Contact us today to get the regular, consistent dental care your smile deserves.

Fluoride has long been one of the most effective, cheapest, and easiest to use tools used in dentistry to help prevent cavities and ultimately tooth infection and loss. The effect of fluoride on dental health was discovered over a century ago and has consistently been shown to strengthen the teeth via augmenting the tooth structure on an atomic level. The outermost layer of the tooth is the enamel, which forms a hard, durable shell around the tooth. This enamel shell is vulnerable to the acid produced by our oral bacteria, however, and this process of acid damage and bacterial infection form the basis for process that forms cavities. Fluoride helps prevent this process by inserting into the atomic structure of the enamel and increasing the acid resistance of said enamel. This has led fluoride to being one of the most revolutionary dental and public health innovations. With no fluoride in Hawaii's water, we do recommend and provide the option for regular fluoride application. Dental caries, more commonly known as cavities, causes tooth decay and infection. While each person has a different risk of developing cavities depending on a number of factors, everyone is susceptible to develop cavities given the right conditions. Therefore, cavity prevention and repair are a core aim of our team when treating all patients. Several factors that increase the risk of cavities are poor oral hygiene, a sugary and/or acidic diet, and dry mouth often caused by medical conditions or certain medications. Ultimately, all these factors allow or accelerate bacterial growth in the mouth. These bacteria secrete acid as they grow and multiply which leads to a breakdown of the tooth structure allowing the bacteria to spread further into the tooth. Dental treatments like root canals, fillings and crowns are provided to remove these bacteria and restore the missing tooth structure. Which treatment is recommended varies but what is consistent is that prevention, earlier detection, and earlier treatment results in easier and cheaper options with better outcomes. Contact us and make an appointment today and get yourself a personalized cavity prevention and treatment plan .

Periodontal disease, more commonly known as gum disease, is when bacterial overload causes constant inflammation of the gums that leads to a of loss of the bone surrounding and supporting the teeth. Since this disease is also primarily caused by oral bacteria, like cavities, each person has a different risk of developing gum disease while everyone is susceptible. Gum disease is often a silent process, with pain or sensitivity rarely being exhibited while the disease progresses. As gum disease worsens, however, the resulting bone loss can lead to to increased difficulty removing food debris, sensitive gums that bleed, and even eventual loose teeth and/or tooth loss. Several factors can also increase risk for and the accelerate the progression of gum disease. Tobacco/nicotine use, diabetes, and even pregnancy can increase the risk of gum disease. The main tool to combat gum disease is prevention or stabilization of the disease with regular cleanings. More specialized treatment with specialist can also be recommended in certain cases. Contact us today to make an appointment to prevent or manage gum disease.

Replacing missing teeth can have numerous benefits, including esthetics and functionality. With the development of new technologies, there are now several viable and effective methods. Which method is best depends on a case by case basis. For one or several missing teeth all next to each other, bridges serve as a good option. This option does require strong teeth next to the missing tooth space and involves shaving down these teeth to place crowns that will support the bridge. Bridges also involve increased hygiene requirements as food and plaque can become caught under the bridge. Working with specialists, another option is dentures which is a removable appliance with "fake teeth". If a patient is missing many or all of their teeth, dentures can replace these teeth with one prosthetic. Dentures often involve a major adjustment for the patient, however, and getting used to using a denture requires diligent learning and practice. Lastly, dental implants are another option for replacing one or several missing teeth. Dental implants provide the closest facsimile to the original teeth; being non-removable, flossable and not requiring alteration of the adjacent teeth. Working with trusted specialists, we can navigate you through the process to place and restore dental implants. Dental implants do involve a considerable investment of time and finances, however, and we are happy to discuss all of these options with you to find out which option is best.
